ling-wen tsai performance
Color Theory: Lesson One, yellow and white paint, bamboo brush and watercolor brush, projected text, 2000
This performance was presented in a 2-D Design classroom-like setting in which the audience sat facing the front of the room. I entered the space and faced the audience to begin the Lesson. In the performance, I use a small Chinese bamboo brush to paint my face yellow vertically and meticulously. Then I changed to the bigger watercolor brush to paint over the yellow lines with white paint horizontally and fearlessly. I use two different kinds of brush, paint and mark making as metaphors/implications of Eastern and Western culture. I smear my face to mix these two colors together, and a new in-between color appears. My identity has become the negotiation of yellow and white. I have become a new species of my own: adapting and adopting.
